Ankle Injuries

While a large amount of ankle injuries are caused by sporting related incidents, there are also a high number of people who do not play sport who also injure their ankle, or have ankle pain. There are a number of different problems that can occur after an ankle injury such as

  • Ligament Sprains or tears
  • Muscle Strains or tears
  • Fractures
  • Stress Fractures
  • Cartilage issues
  • Tendonitis

 

Causes of Ankle Injuries and Pain

Ankle injuries and pain can be caused by

  • Falling
  • Wearing high heels
  • Running on uneven surfaces
  • Twisting or rolling your ankle
  • Poor footwear
  • Fallen arches
  • Tight and weak muscles
  • Poor biomechanics

 

Diagnosis

Often after an ankle injury there is considerable swelling and brusing and it may be wise to get an X-Ray to ensure there is no fracture. Alternatively the team at Galway Bay Physio Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic will be able to diagnose your ankle injury and pain through a thorough physical examination and assessment. Following this examination we will inform you of the steps that are needed to help you recover from your ankle injury and pain, including any other investigations that may be required such as X-Ray or MRI.

 

Treatment

Ankle injuries and pain can take anything from 1 week to 6 months to recover depending on the problem. At Galway Bay Physio Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Injury we have a variety of treatment techniques, and you can be guaranteed that we will do everything in our power to ensure you fully recover.

Your recovery will depend on the factors which may have contributed to your injury, if any, and we will strive to eradicate these factors through our hands on treatment and individualised home exercise programme.
